Place in Education
Symposium for B.C. Educators at Barkerville Historic Town
COVID has interrupted our plans. We have been anticipating a return to our epic event in September 2021, but that might be optimistic given the current pandemic restrictions on gatherings. We'll update our plans as soon as we can with better details.
This is a field trip for teachers set in the spectacular Barkerville Historic Town, and what will be a one-of-a-kind professional development opportunity.
This symposium will explore the challenges of bringing place-responsive curriculum, experiential learning, and geographic literacy into the classroom, and bringing the classroom out into the physical and cultural landscape. These themes, alongside and connected to the inclusion of Indigenous perspectives, are important companion pieces to the redesigned K-12 curriculum in British Columbia. Our intended audience includes anyone who involves students in place-responsive learning, including teachers of Social Studies, Music, Fine Arts, Humanities, Environmental Studies and Outdoor Ed, English/Language Arts, Applied Skills, or Intermediate/Middle Years. Place in Education features a panel discussion, talks, excursions, activities, and a collaborative session, all happening in Barkerville Historic Town. This world-class heritage site provides a unique place to learn, and the shops will be open as this their last weekend of the tourist season. The fee for the symposium is $150 which covers the costs of our event including meals -- see REGISTER for details. Participants must pay for their own transportation and accommodation -- see the ACCESS & LODGING page for options. BCTF Teachers: check with your local PD Chair about accessing funding. PGDTA members may apply for funds to cover all expenses. Due to the scale and atmosphere of this event, we are capping registration at 60. REGISTER opens soon and will close Sep 14 or when we have reached our cap. The REGISTER site will ask for your area of interest: Social Studies/Hist/Geog, English/Language Arts, Music/Fine Arts, and Environmental/Outdoor Ed. The Place in Education Symposium is hosted and sponsored by Barkerville Historic Town and the Pacific Slope Educational Consortium. Our sponsors include the Prince George Social Studies Teachers' Association, the Prince George District Teachers' Association, and School Districts #28 Quesnel and #57 Prince George. We also have participation and support from BCTF professional specialist associations EEPSA, and BCSSTA, with in-kind contributions from UNBC School of Education, BCTELA, and SD13FKV. |
